Contribution of Ethiopian NGOs and CSOs to National Development Costantinos Berhe Tesfu Summary: This three-part presentation reviews the state-citizen relations, the economic and social contribution of NGOs and NGO programme impact and sustainability. In the first part, it is concluded that we have divergent representations of civil society accompanied by somewhat conflicting conceptions of the role of the state in the African passage to development and enabling governance. On the one hand we have the perception of society as producer of the spontaneous interests, demands and institutional resources of democratic change and the conception of the state as creator of the enabling environment for the free democratic activities of individuals on the other. The second part demonstrates NGOs/CSOs contribution of over 3.5 billion Birr worth of support to close to 17 million Ethiopians in need of emergency (10%) and development (90) assistance. It concludes that “one of the primary tasks of CSOs and NGOs is the delivery of civic education to inform people of their rights and responsibilities and that they need to evaluate the global trend in adult education with renewed emphasis on the political and moral dimension of education that accentuates highly developed human capital, support economic restructuring and greater international competitiveness through increased productivity. The third part reviews indigenous NGOs’ contribution in various part of Ethiopia – notably Ethiopian Aid’s programmes in Addis Ababa, North Shoa, and Gojjam. Region:
